On September 8, 2023 a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 hit Morocco, claiming over 2000 lives and over 1000 people in critical condition. Given the current data, we expect the injured to reach as high as 10,000 with many needing emergency and surgical interventions.
While rescue efforts are underway, people are in distress, significant damage has been made to infrastructure, and families are sleeping on the street, too afraid to return to their homes.
UOSSM director Kamel Zine is on the ground working with the Morocco Red Crescent and local authorities doing an in depth medical emergency need assessment.
