This October, UOSSM Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Arab Congress, led the Canadian Parliamentary and Humanitarian Delegation to Syria. Travelling alongside eight Canadian Members of Parliament, leaders from more than eight Canadian charities, and dedicated contributors, the mission's objective was to assess the complex humanitarian challenges Syrians continue to face after years of conflict, and to observe firsthand the tangible impact of Canadian-supported initiatives on the ground.
What the delegation witnessed across the country was both heartbreaking and eye-opening. From Yarmouk, Damascus, Darayya, Tartous, Idlib, Ariha, and to Aleppo, every community visited reflected a profound narrative of immense suffering, resilience, and hope.
Inside UOSSM Canada’s medical centres, the environment stood in sharp contrast to the external devastation. Children waiting for clinical care greeted the delegation with optimism and resilience. Witnessing young patients experience renewed hope because these facilities provided a second chance at health and stability underscored the critical importance of sustained frontline healthcare.
The delegation examined the collaborative efforts of Canadian humanitarian partners across sectors, visiting frontline initiatives. While the determination of Syrian communities is steadfast, it exists alongside immense ongoing requirements for healthcare, clean water, education, mental health support, and sustainable livelihoods.
Behind every recovery effort are dedicated Syrian medical professionals, administrators, and humanitarian workers operating under highly challenging conditions. Over the past year through 2026, UOSSM Canada’s frontline programs have continued to bridge immediate emergency response with long-term healthcare recovery:
Although the delegation has concluded, the work of recovery continues daily for the families and medical teams operating within Syria. Rebuilding a nation’s healthcare infrastructure requires sustained, long-term collaboration. UOSSM Canada returns with strengthened operational frameworks, deep institutional partnerships, and a renewed commitment to supporting the region. The organization looks to the Government of Canada, which has maintained a strong international humanitarian tradition, to continue playing a vital role in supporting Syria's recovery and reconstruction.
UOSSM Canada extends its sincere gratitude to the Members of Parliament who participated in the delegation, namely Greg Fergus, Iqra Khalid, Sameer Zuberi, Jacques Ramsay, Marcus Powlowski, Aslam Rana, Salma Zahid, and Abdelhaq Sari, as well as participating charitable organizations and supporters across Canada who continue to champion humanitarian action.
