UOSSM Canada raises 177000$ for Gaza, Syria and Sudan

On May 26th, 2026, UOSSM Canada hosted a Arafah Day Iftar for am evening of unity, reflection, and compassion in solidarity with the people of Gaza, Syria and Sudan. As we broke our fast together, donations for critical medical relief were collected, ultimately raising over 177000$!

Attendees heard powerful testimonies and urgent calls to action from humanitarian leaders, many who have witnessed the crises firsthand, including:

  • Dr. Anas Al-Kassem
  • Dr. Aliya Khan
  • Dr. Maher Saqqur
  • Dr. Owais Khadem Alsrouji
  •  Dr. Mouhammad A. Jumaa
  • and UOSSM Canada's Gaza team on the ground

It was also our honor to host Sheikh Muhammad Jibreel for a live recitation of Islam's Holy Book.

This event was organized to raise life-saving funds to support UOSSM Canada's ongoing operations in Syria, Gaza and Sudan. All donations will support nutrition programs, medical supplies, and essential treatment distribution programs for people in need.

Dr. Ben Thomson joined us to speak about his experiences treating wounded in Gaza. He is a Canadian nephrologist and educator known for advancing healthcare access and medical education through initiatives in Indigenous communities, Uganda, and Gaza.

Afterwards, Dr. Aliya Khan took the stage to further cover the crisses UOSSM defends from. She is a Professor of Medicine at McMaster University and internationally recognized expert in osteoporosis and parathyroid disease, with over 200 publications and numerous awards for research, teaching, and clinical care.

Then attendees heard from Dr. Maher Saqqur, who is a neurologist and stroke specialist at the University of Alberta. He has supported Syrian medical relief efforts through rehabilitation, telemedicine, and neurological care initiatives.

It was our honour to go live to the people who carry life-saving missions on the ground. Our team in Gaza is working through conditions most of us cannot imagine, and they are our guiding compass in all that we do.

Other speakers included Dr. Owais Khadem Alsrouji, a board-certified Vascular and Interventional Neurologist based in Michigan, who earned his medical degree from Jordan University of Science and Technology and specializes in advanced neurological and stroke care, and Dr. Mouhammad A. Jumaa, a board-certified Vascular Neurologist and Professor of Neurology specializing in interventional neurology and stroke care. He earned his medical degree from Damascus University School of Medicine and completed advanced neurology training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

And before iftar, we were honored to host Sheikh Muhammad Jibreel, a world-renowned Qāri from Egypt who led the Tarawih prayers at the historic Amr ibn al-As Mosque in Cairo for nearly three decades.
