Syria

According to the Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) 2024 – 2025, presented by the health cluster in February 2024, there has been a 4% increase in the number of people in need in

northwest Syria (NWS) compared to last year. Out of 41 subdistricts, 15 are experiencing a severity level of 5, indicating a sectoral collapse that necessitates urgent health response, while 26 subdistricts have a severity level of 4, reflecting extreme sectoral deprivation. The main priority according to the health cluster for 2024 is to continue providing essential quality healthcare services, including sexual and reproductive healthcare. However, significant challenges remain, particularly in maternity and pediatric services in Idlib and Jarablus districts.

According to the Health Cluster Coordination Meeting in Gaziantep, Turkey, on April 25, 2024, up to 112 health facilities may suspend operations due to limited funding, potentially leaving 1.5 million people without access to lifesaving and emergency healthcare services. Furthermore, over 130,000 women and girls of reproductive age are expected to give birth in 2024, and without proper care, this could lead to preventable maternal and child deaths.

UOSSM Canada's response in Syria

The goal of UOSSM Canada's work in Syria is to contribute to reducing the mortality and morbidity rate among children, newborns, and women in conflict and earthquake-affected communities through the Maternal and Children's Hospital. The project enhances access to quality maternal and child health care for those in need in Idlib governorate. The Hospital will provide maternal and child health care in addition to general and pediatric surgery services. The inpatient admission wards will have a capacity of approximately 80 beds, enhancing the ability to provide comprehensive and specialized care. We will be providing integrated primary and secondary health care for around 10,000  beneficiaries per month all of which are children, newborns, and women in Northwest Syria.
