With the large-scale destruction across Gaza causing wide-spread damage to all hospitals and health facilities, there is an urgent need to restore basic health services to those that are semi-functioning to provide much life-saving medical care to the people of Gaza.
UOSSM Canada has been providing emergency health support in Gaza throughout the war and aims to support the decimated health sector through multiple projects
Dr Abdullah Al-Rantisi hospital
Supporting the restoration of services at one of the largest children’s hospitals in Gaza, Dr Abdullah Al-Rantisi hospital. With other hospitals (Kamal Adoun and Al-Durra) currently out of service due to their destruction by the Israeli army, the demand for essential services from Al-Rantisi has increased considerably. Despite major damage to the hospital and the destruction of much of the equipment, the ground floor has been restored and support is needed to help provide essential services for children including Dialysis, Pediatric Surgery, Neurology, Hematology, Pulmonology, Thoracic, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, and ENT.
Eye hospital
Supporting the restoration of the only specialist eye hospital in Gaza so that people that have suffered eye injuries can be treated urgently. Essential equipment, consumables and electrical power systems and support for medical staff will be provided to enable the reopening of this essential service for the people of Gaza.
Essential consumables
Blood bank services and essential laboratory medical tests are urgently needed to support all hospitals and health facilities across Gaza. UOSSM Canada aims to enable the provision of these essential services through support for medical staff to ensure that the facilities can function as are required during these difficult times.
Support throughout the war
UOSSM Canada provided life saving aid and support to the people of Gaza throughout the war, with multiple projects, including:
Wound Care
UOSSM Canada in partnership with Islamic Relief Canada, and UOSSM USA, stives to contribute to the reduction of health-related morbidities and mortalities of the war-affected population in the Gaza Strip by enhancing the accessibility to quality healthcare services for those most vulnerable and in need.
Through the project UOSSM Canada has provided more than 4000 comprehensive medical services and procured 1000 Vacuum-Assisted Closure (VAC) devices. These devices use modern technology to treat open wounds and surgical procedures through Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) without electricity.
UOSSM Canada also provided capacity building to enhance the skills of local medical professionals by training doctors and nurses in Gaza to effectively utilize VAC devices, ensuring the delivery of quality healthcare to patients in need.
Through this project, UOSSM Canada has procured essential medical consumables worth around $700,000 CAD to alleviate the suffering of over 10,000 patients in Gaza.
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support
In collaboration with UOSSM USA, UOSSM Canada seeks to enhance the well-being and resilience of war-affected communities in South Gaza. By providing free specialized mental health services, the project supports individuals impacted by the conflict, aiming to alleviate the psychological and social effects of the crisis.
To date, the project has served over 2,500 beneficiaries, with a goal of reaching more than 11,650 direct beneficiaries by the end of the project, focusing especially on women and children.
The mental health services offered include:
