The Al Shefaa Hospital, in the town of Ahsem, is one of the most important hospitals in the Idlib province, in Northern Syria, that provides services to a large number of people in the area, including internally displaced people (IDPs).
The attack took place despite the cessation of hostilities enforced by UN Security Council Resolution 2268 on February 26 2016, in violation of resolutions 2139 as well as international humanitarian law.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights issued a report on the attack of 80 medical facilities in Syria in 2016, documenting the killing of at least 81 medical workers over the first six months of 2016; eleven of those killed were in the month of June alone.
“More can be done to protect medical workers and civilians. This is a clear violation of International Humanitarian Laws, in particular 2139, we condemn these attacks and ask the international community to enforce such laws to protect healthcare facilities and healthcare workers to the fullest extent,” said Dr. Anas Al Kassem, Chairman of UOSSM Canada/ Ontario Trauma Surgeon.
